5 Easy Fine Motor Activities Using Just 5 Materials
ā¦featuring our lovable dino friend, Chompy!
Sometimes the simplest kits make the biggest impactāespecially when theyāre thoughtfully assembled and engaging enough to keep little hands and minds busy. I love combining sensory play with fine motor work. When my son was a toddler, we had loads of fun playing and working on our fine motor skills using different things found around the house.
Todayās fine motor kit uses only 5 materials:
- Pebbles
- Dinosaur-themed erasers
- Sensory bin/tray
- Tweezer
- Dome scooper (or āgrabber scissorsā as we call them)
And of courseāChompy, our dino buddy, is hungry! Letās feed him through these 5 playful activities:
1. Dino Dig & Scoop
Invite your child to scoop out dinos from the pebble bin using their hands or a simple scoop. This helps toddlers get used to texture and spatial awareness.
2. Tong Grab Challenge
Use child-safe tongs to pick up the dino erasers. We used this small tong I found years ago.
3. Dome Grab Sorting
Sort the dinos by color using the dome scooper. This develops grip strength and reinforces color recognition.
4. Stack & Count
Challenge your child to stack the dinos like coins. How many can they pile without them toppling over? Great for math and balance!
5. Feed Chompy Game - FREEBIE ALERT!
Print Chompyās face and tape it to a box or cup with an opening. Alternatively, you can also glue it to an empty cereal box then cut out the mouth. Your child will "feed" him the dinos one by one using their preferred tool. Count together as they feed! Get your free Chompy printable here!
This simple sensory setup is fun, easy to clean up, and highly adaptable. Add water, rice, or kinetic sand for more sensory fun. And yes, this kit will soon be available in our shopāwith a free copy of the Dino Chomp! Cutting Skills book included.
