Why I Will Never Go Back to a Neighborhood Salon Again

I do my own nails because I just can’t find the time to sit in a salon and relax. I barely have time for myself because my time goes to my baby. One day in December last year, I was able to find a bit of time for myself. My son and I went to my grandma’s house. There’s a salon next door. I decided to get a manicure. Big mistake.

They had a new nail technician. He said he came from a Ricky Reyes salon so I had high hopes. It was my first time there. The owner of the salon already warned him that I had “thin” skin so he should be careful. Oh my… My fingers bled like crazy and he wanted to put merthiolate! I didn’t want mercury in my system! I told him no. Anyway, he got two fingers, one on each hand. I endured the pain for days! I wanted to relax for a while but ended up nursing two swollen fingers for 2 weeks.Next time, I’ll just do it myself or go to the professionals. Lesson learned.

My New Favorite Lulur

My favorite used to be the Green variant, the original one. When I first used this blue one, I didn’t like the smell. I guess they changed the scent and now I’m really loving it! Aside from that, this is more effective on my skin! My skin is smoother probably because of the Vitamin E. Overall, I just feel better after my scrub session with this variant.

I have a few empties. I still have a lot more but I need to organize the photos.

The Body Shop Chocomania Body Scrub. Will not repurchase this. You can read a review in my Archives.

One of my top posts. You can read a review of this product too. This is from Malaysia. My sister went there over the holidays and she got me another variant.

I just feel so happy whenever I finish a bottle of nail polish!

I saw this product months ago in a commercial. I immediately thought that I needed it! I am left with a tummy full of stretch marks after giving birth. I already put lotions, creams, oils during all those months when I was pregnant to no avail. I have a petite body and my stomach is really small. My son is tall so I had a really big belly when I was pregnant. People thought I was going to pop at 7 months because that’s how huge my tummy was.

Anyway, I have a ton of stretch marks, period. I took a “before” photo of one part of my tummy.

This is the area to the left of my navel. It has some discoloration and the stretch marks were really deep. I’ve been using GLYDERM for a month or so now and I took a photo this morning.

I didn’t edit this photo. All I did was brighten it up so you can clearly see my skin. This is also the area to the left of my navel. As you can see, the area lightened up and the stretch marks are not as deep as before. I haven’t been doing any tummy exercises as I just don’t have the time! Plus, I was only cleared to do some exercises a month ago. I am still scared to do any exercise so that will have to wait.

I also took a shot of the area from a distance. I can only see the stretch marks if I stretch out my skin. If it’s just sagging like that, I barely notice most of them. But believe me, they’re there!

One small tube costs Php400+. The big tube costs Php700+. I got the small one first to test it out. I might be allergic. It smells bad, like medicine but I got used to it after some time.

According to the pamphlet given to me by the SA, GLYDERM works by rebuilding collagen and regaining skin elasticity. The result is improved color and size reduction of stretch marks.

I apply this twice a day, after I shower. It also says in the pamphlet that smoking and drinking can reduce the effectiveness of the cream. It says you can see results within 5 weeks of usage. This is absolutely true in my case.

This product is made in France so I had the peace of mind to buy it. It is also safe to use when breastfeeding. I think you can start using this product 5 months after giving birth but to be sure, check with your doctor first.

This is now a permanent part of my morning and night routine.

Tommee Tippee Sippy Cup Topper

I got this months ago for my son. He started drinking from a sippy cup when he was around 4 months old. My favorite SA from Tommee Tippee/Munchkin recommended this product. The bottom is a plain feeding bottle. I only changed the top to make it a sippy cup. I thought it was a good deal and I could save money from buying a real sippy cup.

At first it was great. My son didn’t have problems sucking water out of it. The packaging says to take out all its parts when washing as water can be trapped in the crevices. My husband always does that. One day, I noticed that my son was having a hard time drinking. I tried to suck the water to no avail. I disassembled everything but couldn’t figure out what’s wrong with it. So long story short, we stopped using this topper. Too bad as it wasn’t exactly cheap.

Hello Kitty Jelly Candies

I think I already blogged about this in my old food blog. For those of you who are new to this blog, this is one of my favorite Hello Kitty candies. This is from Thailand. My mom got this for me as a pasalubong (homecoming gift) when she went there over Christmas.

These are strawberry and orange flavored chewy jelly candies. They are coated with sugar. They are not very sweet and I could really taste the distinction in flavors. Love this candy. My mom hoards them when she goes there. If you ever go to Thailand and are thinking about what to buy for pasalubong, get a bunch of these cheap candies. It’s great for kids and kids at heart.

Whipped by Salengga

Whipped by Salengga is a fairly new home business. It started only this year. The owner, Celine, is a trained pastry chef. Salengga is one of her monikers. Her close friends and family call her by that name.

Anyway, one day I had a huge craving for cheesecakes, blueberry and strawberry, to be exact so I sent a message over Facebook to order a few cups… Well, I ordered 4 cups but each one contained 2 pieces so do the Math.

Each order comes with a Whipped spoon. The spoons come in different colorful and whimsical designs. I got a few but forgot to photograph them.

Now don’t judge the presentation right away. You have to take shipping into consideration. I’m pretty happy that this arrived in one piece at my doorstep. They still tasted good. The blueberries were sweet and a bit tart, a perfect complement to the cheesecake. I really liked the crust as it was not too sweet. Some cheesecakes have overly sweet crusts.

The strawberries were a surprise because I actually had a few wholes in there whereas some other cheesecakes are very stingy with this fruit. The strawberries were also superb. I ordered these a few months ago so now I can’t remember which one I liked better but they were both yummy.

My only comment on this though are the spoons. They lend a bit of an aftertaste and affect the taste of the product but that is not a problem at all. You can just use a regular spoon and use the spoons for other purposes. You can put them in your lunchbox or use them for decorative purposes. If you have kids, they will appreciate the new toy. My goddaughter actually likes playing with spoons.

The overall packaging is pretty. Actually, too pretty for its cost. These cheesecakes are super affordable and I couldn’t believe that Celine spent a lot of time and effort in prettifying the package.

Aside from mini cheesecakes, Whipped by Salengga also offers cupcakes, cakes, cake pops and other pastries. You can order for your parties and events. Check out her Facebook page for more information and orders.

What’s Your Favorite Crab Dish?

Mine is just sauteed in lots of garlic with a sauce of light soy sauce, Knorr seasoning and pepper. I just let the crabs cook in the sauce and eat them with lots and lots of rice! Yummy!

Tempura Seaweed Snack

Readers of my old food blog know that I am a huge fan of nori snacks. I found my love in Tao Kae Noi. These seaweed snacks are delicious! They have different flavors and different variants. This is the latest I’ve tasted. This is tempura. It’s very crunchy! I also love putting this on top of yakisoba. It’s been years since I made yakisoba from scratch so I use instant Nissin yakisoba. They go very well together! Tao Kae Noi is not exactly cheap but I really like them plus seaweed is good for my health. This is a healthier alternative to chips. If you’re having a crunchy craving, grab a pack of this.

Fried Chicken and Veggie Dinner

We love fried chicken at home. I always make them from scratch. I don’t use shake n’ bake and other instant stuff. I used to be a huge fan of Crispy Fry though until I discovered how easy it is to make my own breading.

I always serve vegetables when I cook fried chicken. Here’s what I served with this meal:

These are actually leftovers. I had 12 quail eggs, half a tray of baby corn, one red bell pepper and one chayote. I mixed them all up, added some garlic and onions and put some sauce. Voila! A filling and delicious dinner for me and MB.

Not all creams are created equal

Spaghetti is something I don’t screw up… until this batch. This is a cream-tomato pasta dish that I made sometime ago. Instead of using my regular Nestle cream, I used Magnolia cream. Big mistake. It had a weird aftertaste. I can’t describe it but it tastes a bit like stale oil. I was really disappointed. We ended up giving the leftovers to the cats. Next time, I’ll be sticking to my tried and tested (tasted) products.

Hello Kitty Hand Lotion

Aside from lip balms, I also like collecting hand lotions. This was a cute hand lotion I found at Watsons. I didn’t like the first HK product that I bought there. It was just not for me. This one, however, was the complete opposite! It smells nice. It also moisturizes my hands. It does not last the whole day, but for the price (Php99, I think), it was okay. It does not have a sticky feel to it. It’s light and I love it! This was a limited edition thing at my local Watsons.

The Body Shop Choco Mania Body Scrub

I think I got this back in November. It was part of a set I bought. This came with this product .

This smells absolutely like chocolate cake batter! I felt like I was spreading batter all over my body! I felt uneasy at first but got used to it. The beads are bigger than the lulur scrub. They hurt a bit. I had to rinse it off after just 5 minutes. I usually scrub for 10-15 minutes. This scrub also made my skin itch on the first run.

It also feels like I’m spreading butter all over. After a few scrubs, I can really feel like I’m covered in butter. Even after rinsing off, the feeling was still there. It was like Dove when it first came out in the market. Don’t worry though as it does not last long (that icky feeling). But because of this, my skin was truly moisturized. I did not apply lotion the whole day and my skin was still soft and smooth in the afternoon.

I won’t buy this again because of the beads and I really feel uneasy about the delicious smell. I feel like I’m using food instead of a body scrub.

My room and the extension are a total mess. I’ve been trying to work my way through all the clutter to no avail. I just don’t have enough time to do everything all at once so one day I surrendered and said to myself that I will just do one thing at a time. My husband and I have a lot of stuff. Now that we have a son, we have a lot more! So that poses a problem. I want everything to be in their proper places but there’s no proper place to put them in. Luckily, I found a few cheap things at SM:

I’ve been wanting these buckets ever since I first saw them at the stationery department. Back then, they were sold separately and I couldn’t justify the cost. Plus, there’s the issue of what to do with them. One day, they were on sale at 3 pieces for Php100 so I immediately grabbed a set.

The biggest set holds our remote controls, some pens and reading paraphernalia of mine and my camera.

The smaller bucket holds my husband’s “junk”. That usually includes his wallet and coin purse.

He always forgets where he puts his stuff so I designated this bucket for him. The small  trash can will be put in the car. Now we have a place for these small things that bother me because they are usually left lying around in the bed.

I also got a card organizer for only Php100:

Cute and useful finds!

Munchkin Suction Food Bowls

munchkin bowl set, LadyE

I used to love this brand but my attitude changed after a few months of using their products. They just don’t have good quality control. Their products are not consistent. Take these bowls, for example. I like the smallest bowl but the mid-sized bowl does not lock properly. I have to put a lot of effort just to be able to close it. It also takes more effort to open it. I haven’t used the big bowl yet but I think it locks okay.

If you can get a good set, I’d recommend this if your baby is starting to eat solid foods. I like the fact that I can take this with us when we are on the go. The suction base is also helpful. My son likes to tap and get the bowl from his table and the suction base keeps it in place. We avoid a lot of messes because of that feature. They are also easy to clean although sterilising is not recommended. Just use hot water. Now, if I can just find a good sippy cup. Hey, moms! Any recommendations?

My Simple Corned Beef and Cabbage Dish

Who loves corned beef and cabbage? I know I do! This is very simple way of making that dish.
Chop up some bacon and fry them in a little oil. Set aside. Saute some chopped garlic and onions in the same oil. Add the chopped cabbage until they are wilted. Remove from the pan. In the same pan, cook the corned beef. I like mine  bit crispy. Add the cabbage and a little bit of water. Season with salt and pepper. I only used pepper because the meats were already salty. Top with the bacon bits. We ate this with freshly cooked rice and our favorite cold beverage.

That Big Cookie

I love French Baker. I love their breads and pastries. I usually have them for breakfast. This is one of those things on offer that I really like:

This is a dark chocolate chip cookie. My favorite chocolate is dark and I love everything about this cookie. I like the texture and the crunch. I put this in the ref to cool before eating it. That’s just the way I am with desserts and pastries. It is also a big cookie and it took me two sittings to finish the whole thing. I would definitely buy this again.

Christmas Gifts Part 1

Note: If you do not understand why we bloggers post things such as these on our blogs, please skip this post. I like looking at what other people got for Christmas. For me that’s sharing, not boasting.

We don’t receive a ton of Christmas gifts but we are very happy with what we receive yearly because we know these are from people who really care about us.

Got this 2014 Starbucks planner from my husband. It’s his yearly tradition.
These are from our family in Singapore:

Thank you BIL and SIL for the lovely gifts! More gifts to come so stay tuned!

That Pretty Brownie

Starbucks regulars know that during the holidays, this brownie favorite pops up in the food display case. We always order this when it makes it appearance. I think this is the prettiest one yet. I love the whimsical effect those swirls and dots give. The taste is still the same. I wasn’t able to finish this though. My husband and I shared this.

What’s your favorite holiday Starbucks treat?
