Army-Navy

We were craving for burritos because we saw a show in Food Network where the host was eating a burrito and it looked so delicious! My husband and I were salivating already. Our wish came true when we had dinner at Army-Navy. Here’s what we ordered:

20131021_191840

Of course, steak burritos! I asked that it be sliced into 3 so everyone can share. Cousin C was also with us. This was good but not great. I wasn’t very happy with the meat as there were a lot of tendons. I probably won’t order this again.

20131021_191835

This is cheese quesadilla. I love quesadillas. This is delicious and priced just right. Good for sharing too.

20131021_191827

Finally, tacos which are my ultimate Mexican food favorites! This was really delicious! The ratio of meat to vegetables to cheese was perfect. It costs Php160 for 2 tacos. I also like the crunchy shell. Will definitely order this again!

We also ordered LiberTea for everybody. That’s their house blend ice tea. It was also delicious. Our bill was a little under Php1,000. The most expensive item was the burrito. We will definitely be back just so I can get my taco fix!

Cheap Thrills at Café France

One Saturday afternoon, we found ourselves hungry and tired from a day of shopping and going around the mall. We were on a budget so I looked for a place that won’t cost us so much. I saw the breads at Café France and told MB that we should just eat there. Here’s what we got;

20131020_133642

20131020_133653

The first photo is dark chocolate croissant with chopped almonds. The photo above is chicken bechamel. These were my orders. My husband ordered this coffee bun:

20131020_133703

Our bill was a little over Php100. Service was great. They automatically gave us some water when they brought our orders. They also heated the breads aside from the croissant which I didn’t want to be heated. I like the fact that although we didn’t order from the main menu and just ordered from the bake shop, they still accommodated us nicely. We ate at Café France SM Makati. Will surely go there again.

Empties– Bath and Body Works Warm Vanilla Sugar PocketBac

20131006_111934

I saw this photo while browsing my archives. I’m surprised that I never blogged about this product. My husband and I loved this! It smelled exactly like warm vanilla sugar. It smelled delicious! Even my husband could not get enough of it. If I make another haul from BBW, I would probably buy this again.

Was I Living Under a Rock??

Inglot is here! They’ve been open since November 30.

WP_000375

They are located in Glorietta 5 on the ground floor. I looked around and the prices are not bad. The palettes cost Php495 and up. Blushes cost Php495, lipsticks Php700 and up, nail polish Php450 and up. The single eyeshadows range from Php350 upwards.

If you are not familiar with Inglot, it’s basically a customizable brand of cosmetics. You buy an empty palette and fill it up with the shades that you want. This way, you can be sure to use each and every one that’s included in your palette.

I will not purchase from this brand because I have a lot of makeup in my collection that I need to finish. It will probably take me another 2-3 years before I purchase a new palette…well, that is if I have the strength to do that. = )

Tanigue with Soy-Calamansi Glaze

IMG_7159

I suck at fish dishes mainly because I only like them fried or in sinigang. Over the years, I have learned that there are very few fish dishes that I like that are not fried.

I know I need to incorporate some fish in my diet because I’m getting tired of beef and chicken already so I made this simple tanigue dish. This is very easy to make that even if you are a beginner, you can easily pull this off.

Here’s what you need to do. Fry the tanigue filets and set aside. I cooked them in butter and oil. For the glaze, put some soy sauce, calamansi juice, pepper, honey and oyster sauce in a bowl. Whisk them together. Put the fish in the pan and pour the sauce over them. Remember to discard the remaining oil and butter first before putting the fish back.  Simmer until the sauce becomes slightly thick. Serve with steamed rice.

You can also serve this with some side vegetable dishes such as corn and carrots or steamed beans, broccoli and sayote. You can also use some sliced jicama or if you have a bottle of ready-made atchara, that will do the trick.

My Favorite Arizona Drinks

I know this brand has been in our country for some time but I only recently tried them.

IMG_7151

Lemon ice tea is my favorite drink so naturally I would try this first. I loved this! I can clearly taste the tea unlike other brands that are full of sugar and lemon flavor. This has a bit of a bitter taste coming from the tea which I like. I also like that it’s not too sweet. I can also taste the lemon flavor. This is made from natural ingredients and that’s always good in my book. It is a bit more expensive than our usual Lipton but we already made the switch. Even my husband likes this and he is not a big iced tea fan. This comes in tetra pak and in bottles.

IMG_7158

My other favorite drink from Arizona is this lemonade. Whenever I’ve had enough iced tea, I order lemonade. I also like this. It’s not too sour, not too sweet. It’s just right. MB also loves this. It’s a good break from his usual sodas.

I stock these drinks in the fridge so I always have one when the craving hits. It saves me time and money from going back and forth to the store. MB also likes to have a sweet drink whenever I cook an extra special dinner for him.

The Body Shop Camomile Waterproof Makeup Remover

IMG_7000

I wrote my initial thoughts about this product in my old blog. You can read about it here

After several uses, I found that the Etude House Mascara Remover  is more effective in removing very tough makeup i.e. Kiss Me Mascara and Liquid Liner. But, for other waterproof makeup, this product is okay.

I have two bottles of these. I also still have half of my Etude House Mascara Remover which I use as my overall makeup remover but I think I will be sticking to the TBS makeup remover from now on. It’s more expensive but I like the ingredients better as this is from The Body Shop.

This Local Spanish Sardines, I Like!

IMG_6999

In my old food blog, I talked about not liking any type of locally produced canned sardines because of the quality. Most of the fish still have guts in them so the taste is greatly affected. I also always find green goo in them. I don’t know what that is so I just avoid them completely.

My husband and I have this habit of going to our favorite Pan de Manila branch on Sunday afternoons. He loves pan de sal. I’m not a huge fan because they give me migraines but I can eat a few pieces so that my husband can enjoy eating them. He does not want to eat if I’m not eating. He’s sweet that way.

Anyway, on that trip, I was craving for some Spanish Sardines because I saw a photo in Facebook. I stayed in the car and asked MB to check if there was any Spanish Sardines. He said there was so he got one bottle.

These were delicious! MB bought Cheese Whiz but stopped eating that after he tasted this. The fish were clean and there were no weird tastes. The price is also okay. Sorry, I can’t remember but I know it’s quite affordable. Some local Spanish Sardines are outrageously priced.

I know it’s weird but I actually put a bit of Maggi Savor Calamansi over the sardines when I put them inside the pan de sal. I just like the salty-sour taste. That plus the heat of the oil makes this a wonderful filling merienda. We ate this with our favorite cold beverages. Coke for him, ice tea for me.

Have You Tried the Food at Family Mart?

IMG_6997

I’ve only tasted one and this was given to me. This is their California Maki.

IMG_6998

It looks really good in the photo but looks can be deceiving. This tasted terrible. I didn’t like it all! The stuffing was a bit tough. The rice was not cooked right. I have too many complaints about it. I tried to finish the tray but couldn’t. I left 2…and one more tray. I was given 2 trays. I gave the rest to my cats because they usually like the California Maki from Tokyo Tokyo. This one, they ignored completely. They took one whiff and left. Even the stray cats outside didn’t eat it.

I am scared to taste their other food offerings because of this experience. If you have any favorites from Family Mart, I’d appreciate a shoutout below.

This costs Php99. They also have sandwiches and noodles available.

What’s Your Favorite Krispy Kreme?

IMG_6981

Mine is Original Glazed but from time to time I get interested in their special offerings such as the Hershey line. For this box, I ordered Nutella, Ferror Rocher and M&M’s. I liked all of them. I could not finish one in one sitting though. I had to cut one donut in half, eat it and then keep the other in the ref for next time.

That’s a whole Ferrero on the donut. I just didn’t like the icing underneath. It was too sweet for my taste. The M’&M’s were fun to eat. I think I liked it the most because it was not too sweet.

I wonder what’s next from Krispy Kreme.

Finding a New Use for this Product

20131205_224417

I know I already made a review of this product in my old blog but I can’t seem to find it. Anyway, I hated this product. It stings my eyes so bad. I only used this once and then left it on top of one of my drawers.

A few weeks ago, I saw it again and thought that maybe I can use it to clean my brushes. Surprise, surprise! It did a wonderful job! It was even better than my MAC brush cleaner!

It didn’t dry up my brushes. The bristles are still soft even after several uses. I was actually thinking of just buying this once my brush cleaner runs out. I’ll decide when the time comes. For now, I’m happy with this as a brush cleaner.

My Current Vanity

20131205_224525

This is my current setup. I am still not sure what I want to do or how I want my vanity to look. I want to do a million things with my makeup collection. I want a complete makeover of our room and extension. I’m just trying to find the time to do all that. In the meantime, this setup works for me.

I’ll give you a quick rundown from top to bottom. On the left are 2 of my UD Book of Shadows. Beside those are some toiletries. I don’t want them there but I don’t know where to put them at the moment. To the right are my mascaras, eye primers, etc. Next are my lotions and the yellow cup holds my lip glosses and Hello Kitty brushes.

I have successfully brought down my lipstick collection. I gave away a lot to my mom and Cousin C. I will try to finish more before I buy new ones. In the middle is my Anna Sui jar that still holds my sponges. On the cover is my Avon charm bracelet. To the right are my primers and other face stuff.

The Muji drawers still hold my blushes, bronzers, highlighters and other miscellaneous stuff. To the right are my current palettes. I am trying to finish these palettes. So far so good.

Scattered all over the drawers are different nail polishes and other pretty stuff. I have a ton of cleaning and fixing to do. I hope I can accomplish them before the year ends…but I probably won’t. Anyway, I’ll give you an update once I finalize my vanity.

The Body Shop Lip Butter

IMG_7268

Readers of my old blog know that I am lip balm junkie. I just gotta have it. I have super, super dry lips so I need to moisturize them every now and then. I have to admit thought that this is the first time I’ve tried a lip butter. I’ve been avoiding it for years for fear that it would feel too “buttery” on my lips. I don’t like the feeling of oil on my lips and I thought it would have that effect too. Boy, was I wrong. The butter melts on my lips upon contact. It feels so nice and luxurious on my lips.

My lips feel soft and smooth the whole day. I only use this when I’m going out. It’s enough to keep the dryness at bay. I just supplement with my other TBS lip balm which I need to blog about soon.

I don’t know how much this costs because I got it with the set but I’ll be sure to buy more lip butters when I finish this pot.

Weird Ice Cream Flavors?

For us, not really!

20131204_204947

We Filipinos are quite adventurous when it comes to the food we eat. Take for example this ube-cheese flavored ice cream. Ube and cheese may sound odd to a foreigner but here, it’s a good combo.

MB’s favorite ice cream flavor is ube. Mine is vanilla but of course, I eat other flavors from time to time. MB bought this several nights ago and we had it for dessert after dinner.

We really liked these two flavors. The cashew and mango bits were great. The cheese in the ube ice cream balances the flavors well. It’s a good mixture of sweet and salty.

Cheap delicious dessert after a great dinner.  Selecta has other flavor offerings for the holiday season.

Evolving Tastes

I’ve been taking inventory of my cosmetics and found a few bottles of nail polish that are not suited to my taste anymore.

IMG_7388

IMG_7389

IMG_7390

I’ve been simplifying my life so I’ve been doing a lot of purging. First, I will no longer buy matte nail polish. It’s just not for me. I like shiny and glittery nail polish. As for the other nail polishes in the photos, I will no longer buy nail polish from Etude House. They just break my heart after a few months. I can no longer use them because they have become too thick. Some just dry up. My stash now only includes OPI, China Glaze and Chanel. I will continue to buy from these brands because they last a long time. They are expensive but they last long on my nails and they are still good in the bottle even after 2 years.

I gave these bottles to Cousin C.

What have you been purging lately?

The Forgotten Recipe

IMG_7263

This is chicken and cashews. I was inspired by a dish in one of the episodes of Luke Nguyen’s Greater Mekong. But, for the life of me, I cannot remember how I made this! The hostess was cooking this dish as an accompaniment to some porridge. I simplified the recipe and this is the result.

I think this is how I did it. I sauteed some garlic, onions and tomatoes until they were caramelized. Then I added the chicken pieces. I’m not sure if I used some light soy sauce and honey too. I then added the chopped cashews which I obliterated in the processor. This was sooo good! My husband loved this too. The flavor was just amazing! I hope I can recreate this in the future. Maybe when there’s a replay of said episode I’ll have my moment of genius again? I should write it immediately then.

The Body Shop Sweet Lemon Soap

IMG_7333

I am a sucker for lemon scented products especially bath products. So, it was no surprise that I fell in love instantly with this soap from The Body Shop. It’s sweet and lemony and not overpowering. The only thing I didn’t like about this was it didn’t give much of a lather like the other TBS soaps that I’ve tried in the past. Will I repurchase though? Absolutely! The scent and moisturizing effects are well worth the Php195 price tag!

Check out my review on the strawberry soap!

Empties – Bifesta Bright Up Makeup Remover

IMG_7346

I finally finished this bottle of makeup remover. I liked it but eventually, I realized I needed a lot to remove my makeup and sometimes my skin ends up dry. I will not be repurchasing because I will be sticking to The Body Shop Chamomile Makeup Remover after I finish my last bottle of Etude House Mascara Remover.

From Malaysia with Love

My sister went back to Malaysia just a month or so after our trip. She brought home a few goodies.

These are socks and wash cloths for my son. For MB and I, she got this:

You can read a review of this shower cream here.  Although my sister is a complete cheapskate, she is slowly learning how to buy good pasalubong (travel gifts). I think I just need to go with her on a few more trips.

Cute Cheap Toys for the Little One

I like scouring the supermarket for interesting stuff. If you followed my older food and lifestyle blogs you would know how much I like this activity. Back in October, I found these at The Landmark Supermarket:

juju, ladyE

Egg Jujus! One egg has a stuffed animal keychain and a pack of candies. It costs only Php46.75.

koala, ladyE

I got the Koala and the Turtle.

turtle, ladyE

I don’t allow my son to play with them without supervision. These are, after all, not baby safe toys but they’re fun and cute!

Pan – MAC Lightful

mac lightful, ladyE

I hit pan on my MAC Lightful way back in October. If you are a regular reader of my other blog you’d know that I was out for most of October. I only posted 4 times.

Anyway, I enjoyed this foundation but it still couldn’t keep my acidic skin at bay. My skin would still get dark in the afternoon. I wanted to keep the compact but it broke. It’s the first time that a high end foundation compact broke on me.

If you want to read more about this product, head on over here.  I will not repurchase as I am very happy with my Paul & Joe Foundation.

Affirmations

Being a mom is a never ending whirlwind of physical and emotional ups and downs. I’ve had a lot of moments when I just wanted to break down. There are times when I feel that I am alone in this. One day, cousin C and I went to the mall and I found these:

IMG_7141

IMG_7142

IMG_7143

I fell in love with them as soon as I saw them. My spirits were immediately lifted. I didn’t buy them immediately because I didn’t have the budget but I got them as soon as I had the extra cash. It was also great timing because I needed to throw away some pillows. I need to have a ton of pillows with me when I sleep so don’t go thinking what I’m going to do with all these pillows. .

A month later, I found these:

IMG_7383

Ignore the lint. We ran out of lint remover when I took the photo. The blasted thing is always out of stock in the stores.

IMG_7384

Whenever I feel down, I just look at these pillows and read the affirmations. They make me feel better. Hugging and sleeping also help. = )

That Classic Pinoy Breakfast

We Filipinos love dried fish. We especially love eating them for breakfast with some garlic fried rice, fried eggs and a dip of vinegar and maybe a salad of tomatoes and cucumbers on the side. I was browsing my archives and found this:

IMG_6103

I have no idea if I already blogged this in my food blog before but it’s worth blogging about again. The dried dilis or anchovies is from one of my sister’s provincial trips. This is boneless dilis which I super, super love. I don’t know if I can get this here in Manila but the closest I found was from Rustan’s Supermarket. Nothing beats the real fresh thing from the province though.

Looking at this photo now, I wish I had some garlic fried rice then. I dipped this in Sukang Pinakurat. which you can read more about in my old food blog. I have several entries about it there.

This Product Helped Alleviate Our Baby's Severe Spit-Ups

My baby spits up a lot. I was actually concerned about him having GERD or something. Our first pediatrician was waaay too paranoid and because she was an Infectious Disease doctor, she ordered a ton of blood tests on my 2-month old baby. That was a horrible ordeal and we never want to go through that again. To say we hate her is being kind. So we changed pediatricians and now we are very happy with our doctor. I told him about my concerns about GERD and he said that it’s really quite normal for babies to spit up. I told him that my baby almost spits up half of his milk intake. He said not to be concerned as long as my baby is gaining weight. My baby is right on track when it comes to his weight. He is not fat but he is also not skinny. That’s just the way we want him to be.

The spit ups decreased for a while but now they are back again with a vengeance because he is becoming super active. After he feeds he wants to lie on his tummy immediately and play. Heck, he sometimes wants to lie on his tummy while feeding. He rolls around in bed like crazy. He is now also learning to crawl and he is taking frog steps. He is literally like a frog. He shoots himself forward when he wants to go from point A to B. I am still concerned about the spit ups though so I will ask his doctor about it on our next visit.

Anyway, when I mentioned these spit ups to my best friend M back when my baby was still a few weeks old, she mentioned that I should put my baby on an inclined position during and after feedings so my husband bought him one of these:

IMG_6048

This is a sleeper that he got from Baby Company. I can’t remember the price anymore but it was fairly priced. This helped us a lot. His spit ups no longer scared me. As a very new mom back then, every little thing scared me and I’m glad that there are products out there that help ease our fears. I also like the cushions on the sides as they prevented him from rolling around and pulling stuff. He sleeps with us in bed so I was concerned about SIDS. My baby could lie on his side when he was 2 weeks old so SIDS was really a big concern for my husband and I. This sleeper kept him on his back all through the night. So this product was really a great buy. Two birds with one stone, right?

We stopped using this about a week or two ago because my baby has gotten very big and very active. He now sleeps on his tummy on the bed. Our doctor said not to be afraid of SIDS anymore as my baby can already move his head around and can fully support it. He said that when he lies on his tummy and he has difficulty breathing, he will change his position. We will be keeping this though in case we decide to have another baby.

Note: Before using this product, ask your pediatrician first if it’s a good idea. We even used a pillow with this but pillows and other things around a sleeping baby can increase the risk of SIDS. When my son was using a pillow, I would wake up almost every hour just to check on him. Now, he still sometimes uses a pillow but he prefers to just lie flat in bed. Ask your doctor. This worked for us. Hopefully it will work for you too.

Great Way to Start the Week

Welcome to the new chapter of my life!

I’ve been blogging for several years now through my food and lifestyle blogs. Over the past couple of years, a few changes took place in my life. Looking at my other two blogs made me realize that I also need to make changes in my blogging world. So, my husband and I decided on tying everything together and putting them in this blog.

This blog will still chronicle my love of food, fashion and beauty with a few other bonuses. It will include my life as a new mom, my travels and some lifestyle posts.

I welcome old readers and friends from my other blogs and also new people who will stumble upon this blog. I named it Lady E’s Recipe Box because these are basically my recipes for life. They include literal dish recipes as well as recipes for fashion and beauty success, recipes for moms and simple recipes for happiness and living life to the fullest.

I hope you will enjoy these posts as much as I have enjoyed living them. Welcome to my Recipe Box.

Fruiser Shower Cream

IMG_7157

This was a pasalubong from my sister when she went to Malaysia. She usually gives us food for pasalubong so I was really surprised that she got me a beauty product instead. I think she also gave soaps to our cousins, grandma and mom. I think she took my cue when we were together on our Malaysian trip way back in August. I bought toiletries for everyone.

Anyway, on with the review. This is made with goat’s milk which I really like. I like soaps made with goat’s milk but if it’s cow’s milk, my skin reacts with rashes. I don’t know why. Maybe goat’s milk is milder, gentler?

This shower cream smells soooo good! It smells clean.  Although it’s supposed to be a cream and it’s thick, I still need 2 pumps to get a good lather. I use a bath lily and usually one pump is all I need with shower gels.

I like the fact that this does not make my skin dry even though it’s an inexpensive product. I know it’s inexpensive because it’s from my sister. She is such a cheapskate and I mean that in a funny way. We are so used to her “bad” gifts that we just laugh at them so this was a real surprise. It is one of the few gifts I got from her that I could really use.

MB also likes this shower cream. I won’t buy this for myself but I would be glad to receive this again from my sister.

Project Stop & Splurge: Day 9

It’s Day 9 and I’m very proud of myself. We went to the mall last weekend and I’m happy to report that I only bought essentials. They will be posted in the other categories of this blog.  I almost failed but I was able to hold back. The trick is to avoid the stores I am most likely to buy from. But sometimes I tend to be a masochist and intentionally visit them especially my favorite ones. So yeah, it’s hard.

If you’re a shopaholic, another way to tame your addiction is by watching the show My Shopping Addiction on cable. They feature shopping addicts that are out of this world in my book. I guess I’m pretty lame compared to them. I watch this show to compare my shopping habits to theirs. If that show does not give you a reality check, I don’t know what will.

In other news, even my Project No Baby Buys is doing well. It’s Day 13 and so far I have resisted the sale items at Baby Company. I finally finished November and I know December is going to be brutal for this project. Oh, I need strength!
