Food SnapShots

food snapshots

bacon and pancakes for breakfast// fiesta ham in May// rice, scrambled eggs and bbq luncheon meat for breakfast// corn and carrots, chicken and spinach// mushrooms// whole wheat pasta

I found a pancake mix at Rustan’s Fresh that I really like. It’s easy to make and delicious! I suck at making pancakes from scratch so I usually just buy mixes. I added some chocolate chips to this batch.  They were yum!

I also found a few slices of Fiesta Ham. I love this kind of ham but they only make an appearance during Christmas time so I was really surprised to find a pack at Rustan’s Fresh. It was delicious as always,

I also tried this BBQ luncheon meat from Purefoods. Really love it. It might taste a bit weird to some but it’s becoming a staple in my pantry.

Fried chicken with corn and carrots is a regular on our dinner table so one day I decided to add some creamed spinach. It was a disaster! I didn’t like it at all! Never again!

I love garlic mushrooms. I can eat eat them for breakfast, lunch or dinner!

I found this whole wheat pasta at Landmark. I decided to try it. Big mistake. It was grainy and dry and I just didn’t like the texture. I also didn’t like the taste. My husband also didn’t like it. Another item off my list.

Mommy and Zac’s Craft Corner

My son and I have been doing a lot of crafting. I am a total crafter and I have been crafting ever since I could hold a pair of scissors and glue with my hands. I like all sorts of crafts so it is no surprise that my son likes crafting too.

Being a mommy to a toddler is hard work. Most of my time is devoted to him so I needed to find a way to get things done while taking care of him/keeping an eye on him. One day, I decided to make “craft time”. I included him in all of my projects. We’ve been doing a lot of crafts together so I thought I’d share them with you starting with today’s craft:

We like puppets. I like to make stories featuring our finger puppets. They just make the stories more exciting. I also give them funny voices so that  they can “talk” to the little one. This keeps him engaged.

For today’s project, we made a giraffe. It’s very easy to make. Here’s what you need:
*felt (not felt paper. get the real thing)
*double sided tape
*beads for the eyes
*needle and thread
*one-hole puncher

You can get a pattern on the Internet for this project. It will be so much easier or you can just draw one. You just need to cut 2 pieces of yellow felt to serve as the giraffe’s head and body. The back portion will include the ears. Sew the bead eyes on the front as well as the white felt that will serve as the snout.

Cut out 2 ossicones (antler/horn) from white felt. Sandwich them between the top yellow felt and the bottom yellow felt and sew everything together. Don’t forget to leave an opening for your finger at the bottom.

Punch out circles for the giraffe’s nose and his spots using a one hole puncher. Stick them to the body with double sided tape. You should also use the same puncher for the tape so that the sizes are even. It’s a bit tricky to remove the tape’s cover but if you’ve got long nails, it won’t be a problem.

Your giraffe is now finished! Have fun with your kids making and playing with your very own giraffe finger puppet!

This project is recommended for kids 7+ years old because it involves tiny parts and needles. Be sure to supervise your little ones if you want them to do this project. I mentioned that my son was involved in this project. Since he is only 1, I only allowed him to play with the felt and the cut strings. Strings are a strangulation hazard so be careful. When he got bored with the felt, he proceeded to play with his other toys and he was contented playing beside me. We usually play and do crafts on the floor so that we can sit together. That way he feels that he is involved in Mommy’s Work.

Let me know if you’ll make this project. Leave a link to your site or send me photos so that I can feature them here. Happy Crafting!

My First Successful Pancit

I suck at making noodle dishes. I suck at making any kind of pancit. I don’t know why but this dish just does not agree with me.

One day, I decided to be courageous and just tried cooking it. I followed the recipe in the Maggi website. It was a success! It was really delicious! The noodles were not soggy and the taste was just right.

I also tweaked the recipe a bit and added/omitted a few ingredients. I will continue to practice making this dish until I can make it with my eyes closed. My son loves pancit so that’s motivation enough for me.

Of course I had to serve some toasted buttered bread with this.

I Guess I don’t Have a Sense of Humor

I found this huge bottle of Bed Head TIGI Self Absorbed Mega Nutrient Shampoo at S&R. It was a packaged deal with a conditioner. I’ve long wanted to try this product and it was fortunate that I had the budget for it.

It was a huge disappointment. This shampoo makes my hair dry and rough. It’s also a tangled mess after showering. I have a hard time combing it and I’m already using a wide-toothed comb from Goody. I have curly hair so I just skip combing whenever I use this shampoo.

The scent is orange which I like but the likes end there. I don’t shampoo every day so I can really observe what this does to my hair. I’ve also noticed that I get a lot of hair fall whenever I use this shampoo. It’s not exactly cheap so I’m still using it from time to time.

It says on the packaging that you need to have a sense of humor to use their products. I guess I don’t have one.

That Wonderful Ice Cream Called Blue Bell

We love ice cream in our family. Well, who doesn’t? I’m lactose intolerant but I still find ways to enjoy this cool dessert.

I found this tub of Blue Bell Moo-llenium Crunch at Rustan’s Fresh. I read the ingredients and they looked delicious so I immediately put it in my cart. I know my husband would enjoy it.

It has nuts and chocolate and vanilla ice cream. I love vanilla ice cream and I love nuts in my ice cream so I give this a double thumbs up. I also like the fact that it’s not too sweet.

One tub is quite expensive so I only buy this as a treat from time to time. I’ll be sure to buy one tub again next time I’m in the super. Yummy!

Mommy Survival Gear

It’s exhausting to keep up with a toddler. All stay-at-home moms know this very well. I have to constantly come up with ways to entertain my son so that I can get some work done. After a year of taking care of him, I managed to get a routine going and have my own survival gear for my day to day “combat”.

First, batteries.

My son has a lot of toys that need batteries so I stock up on them. I don’t want to be caught without them when a toy breaks down because the batteries are used up. He enjoys playing with his interactive toys and those few minutes can give me some sanity.

Next are stickers.

My son enjoys them a lot! We call them “awards”.  Every time he does something good, he will be rewarded with a sticker which I stick on his shirt. He likes playing with them and sticking them to his toys. When he is bored and I am exhausted, I whip out a sheet of stickers and start sticking them to him. They’re cheap and they’re good entertainment. I am lucky because I have a ton of stickers from my childhood. I am a sticker freak so I think we are covered for a couple of years or more. The ones you see in the photo only cost me 10 pesos each…more than 20 years ago!

I also have a stash of cheap toys. I peruse the aisles of bookstores every week to find cheap toys that my son will enjoy.

The one on top is Monkey from the movie Kung Fu Panda. This is a Happy Meal toy. My husband got this for him. The sunglasses are actually glow glasses. I put glow sticks into the rims… which reminds me. I need to buy a bunch of glow sticks. Finally, this dragonfly hand puppet from Ikea which I got for only 35 cents.

Lady E’s Tip: I collect Happy Meal toys and keep them for when we go out. The new toys help my son to be behaved while waiting for the food. You can collect cheap toys too and pull them out when you need them.

My son is crazy about trains so I make sure that this train is within reach. He can easily climb down the bed and get it from his Read and Play Station which I will share with you soon.

My son loves books. He has a nice collection already. I started buying them when I was still pregnant with him. I make sure to rotate the books we read because he gets bored easily.

Finally, reward toys for when he is a good boy or when he learns something new.

They don’t need to be expensive. They can be stickers as well. Browse the sale bins of toy stores and you will surely get ideas. This Toy Story car was a bit special because it was his monthly “birthday” so I decided to give him something special but he only got it after performing one task I assigned to him.

I have many more tricks up my sleeve and I’m excited to share them with you so stay tuned!

Is there anything better than pork belly?

Yes, barbecued pork belly!

We love fried pork belly in our house but I don’t serve it often because one, it’s expensive and two, it’s not very healthy. One day, while doing my usual grocery shopping at Rustan’s Fresh Century City, I saw these barbecued pork belly on BOGO! Get 500g and you get another 500g free! I couldn’t pass up the offer. And, knowing that they have a very good chef that does all the marinating, I immediately got 2 packs to take home with me.

I wasn’t disappointed! This was really good! I just cooked them in a grill pan and topped with chopped spring onions. My husband got his favorite Sukang Pinakurat dip. I love buying pre-cooked or prepared stuff at Century City because they don’t disappoint. They are very helpful on lazy nights or nights when I am too tired to do a lot of cooking.

I also cut the fattiness of this dish by serving some bitter gourd.

Japanese doughnuts

We like donuts but we don’t eat them regularly. We buy them as a treat..or for a quick breakfast. One day, I decided to try the Japanese Doughnuts from a kiosk in Landmark.

Of course I got the nutty version because I just love nuts! This was good. It’s different from regular doughnuts because it’s chewy and light. It’s also not very sweet. I like it but it takes a lot of getting used to especially if you are a hard core Krispy Kreme fanatic.

I got this chocolate version for my husband. If I am not mistaken, this has a chocolate filling. He didn’t like it. He said that he likes Krispy Kreme better.

I think this will be a great snack for my son and I so I’ll be sure to buy a few pieces next time we’re out.

Of Seafood and Snacks

Of seafood and snacks

I have long wanted to try the salmon at Sbarro but it was too expensive in my opinion. One day, mom ordered them for me. I was very excited to try it as they said it was a bestseller. I got very disappointed. The fish itself was good but the lemon butter sauce was a disappointment. It didn’t deliver. I reckon I can make a better version of it at home.

These are carrot and cheese curls that my boy used to snack on. They are close to being tasteless so I guess that’s the reason why he didn’t like them very much.

This is my favorite ice cream. This is the Moo-llenium Crunch from Blue Bell. It is just so divine!

Next is the terribly sweet lactose-free ice cream. Even my son hated it. I will never buy this again! Found it at Rustan’s Fresh Century City.

Finally, crabs! I just love crabs! My cousin and I are the only ones in the family that like crabs. Oh, my son loves them too! After this pesky urticaria, I will have my fill of crabs!

Food Fun

food fun

I have a ton of food photos that I’d like to share with you. Foodies from my old food blog are definitely enjoying these.

I love burger steaks and we had a ton of leftover patties so I decided to make a white sauce to go with them. Just use all-purpose cream and season it and add some mushrooms.

I love kani salad. This one is from Tokyo Tokyo. I like the one from Yoshinoya better.

I found this TamaYaki kiosk at Landmark food court. My sister was raving about their takoyaki. I am not a huge fan of takoyaki because I don’t like the taste of tako (octopus). She said they had many fillings to choose from. I chose the shrimp and kani filling. I made the mistake of choosing the combination sauce of spicy and regular. It was too spicy for my taste. I couldn’t enjoy the takoyaki but they showed promise. Next time I will try them again with just the regular sauce.

The honey lemon juice was also great. It was too sweet for me but I’m sure that can be remedied next time.

Finally, I can eat hummus every day! I just love it and I love how healthy it is! I got a tub of hummus from Rustan’s Gourmet to Go in Century City.

Typical Week

I am trying to catch up with my posts so I will be featuring more of these kinds of posts in the following days. I have so many blog ideas to share with you but I need to write about my backlogs first as they are also important.
typical week

Now that Hyphen is on hiatus, I have more time to take care of my family and check off a few items on my To-Do List daily. A typical day for me involves a lot of chores but I try to change it up from time to time so that I won’t be bored with a routine.

I always try to find nice, affordable toys for the little one to play with. He gets bored easily (like me) and needs to have something new on a regular basis. That is why I visit toy stores every week.

I also tend to shop for his house clothes on a regular basis because he just grows up too fast!

I got these two recipe books from SM several months ago. They have many interesting and easy recipes which we have enjoyed. I will also make an effort to utilize these cookbooks more. I am making a menu planning system which I can hopefully share with you soon. It still needs a lot of work.

This is my favorite travel palette. This is the Too Faced Fairy Edition Glamour to Go palette. I am currently using the bronzer. Can’t wait to travel to be able to use it.

Finally, I also make sure to use up any leftover food in the fridge. These burritos were tasteless so I had to come up with several ways to make them edible.

Upcycling My Benefit Box

I have already finished my Confessions of a Concealaholic Kit from Benefit but I didn’t want to throw away the box. So, one afternoon, I decided to upcycle it.

I got my trusted rolls of washi tapes for this project.

It now looks like this:

and houses some of my creations.

This is a great way to upcycle your old boxes and organizers. You don’t have to buy new ones. Just update the design and you can have something pretty on your vanity or shelves to display. You save money too!

Food Adventures

I have so much food posts to share with you and I’m running waaay behind. As a matter of fact, these photos are from May. So, I thought I’d just share several with you in one post.

I will also write a short review for new foods that I try and also some recipes. I have so much backlog stuff that when it’s time to write about them, I’ve already forgotten the recipe. I think this new system will help.

food adventures

Wedge fries // onion rings // jerk chicken // seafood dimsum // leche flan // chicken pan de sal

I love these wedge fries from Burger King. Sadly, they are no longer available. Please bring them back! I also enjoy their onion rings from time to time.

This jerk chicken was delicious! It doesn’t look much but I really liked it. Unfortunately, I no longer remember the recipe.

These are seafood dumplings from Century. We didn’t like them and it took a long time to finish one box.

This leche flan is from Rustan’s Gourmet to Go. It was good and very affordable. Enough to satisfy my leche flan cravings. I would buy this again.

Finally, this chicken pan de sal that had non-existent fillings. There just wasn’t enough. I also got them from the Rustan’s bakery.

DIY Afternoon

My son and I spend a lot of time together. He easily gets bored so I try to come up with activities that we can do together. Here’s one.

This is very easy to do. Just get your phone or tablet chargers and some washi tape.

Choose your design and start taping!

This rosy one is my sister’s. She was very happy with the results.

This purple one is mine. Wrapping your chargers with different designs will also help you distinguish which is which and who owns a specific charger.

This green, yellow and gray one is for my husband. He was really surprised when he saw this.

So what did my son do? Well, he was busy playing with the washi tapes while I did the DIY.

Those Burnt Seafood Balls

I am not a chef. I learned how to cook from my sister and grandma. Over the years, I’ve studied and experimented with different dishes. I still do. I also like trying new things. I also make a lot of mistakes.

I saw these seafood balls from Century in the frozen section of the supermarket. I like seafood so I tried them. The problem is I burnt the potato shreds coating the balls. I was too distracted that day so it was expected. I always burn dishes when I have too much going on in my head. Anyway, we removed the burnt coating and dipped the balls in some sweet chili sauce. They were actually good! I bought a bunch of different frozen products from the Century brand and this was the best. It has ground fish and shrimps and probably some crabs too but I really couldn’t distinguish the taste. I don’t think I will buy this again. I will probably experiment with my own seafood balls.

Breakfast and Snacks

breakfast and snacks

grilled tomatoes, fried rice and burnt hotdog // chopped bananas // BBQ luncheon meat // carrot and cheese curls // beef and cheese pockets

We loved these pocket snacks. They were a bit bland but they were good enough to eat. They were very cheesy which my husband loved. They are very easy to prepare as I only need to pop them in the oven. No need to defrost.  The best part is I got them on sale at S&R !

Burgers for Lunch

Saturday lunches are special in my home. I make an effort to plan a good Saturday lunch because we are all together. This is the day when I usually reserve elaborate dishes that require several steps to complete. One such dish was this burger meal.

I cannot remember the recipe for the patties but you can use any burger recipe that you have or just browse the Internet. I also grilled the bread and some tomatoes. Finally, I caramelized some onions.

I served this with some chips. All of us really enjoyed this lunch.

Summer Favorites

I have a couple of things to share with you that I used a lot during the past summer.
First is this eyebrow trimmer from The Face Shop.

I used to buy the cheap ones from Watsons but they don’t last a long time. They get dull easily so I need to replace them every now and then. This one from TFS stays sharp for quite a long time. I also enjoy using it on clients. I haven’t nicked my skin in so long unlike when I use the cheap ones. I always get nicked and I also accidentally nick my clients’ skin. Uh..oh. Not good at all. This is more expensive than the generic ones but it’s worth every peso.

Another favorite is this moisturizer from Clinique. This is the Superdefense SPF25. I am not sure if it is still available. I got this as a GWP from a past purchase. It is a really good moisturizer for the hot summer days. I used up one tub over the summer. I am now using another moisturizer which I think I already shared with you in my old blog. I’ll try to see if I already made a post about it. If not, it will be featured here.

Keeping it Fresh

Don’t you just hate it when chips or other snacks go soggy or tough or rubbery when you leave the bag open because you cant finish it anymore? I use Scotch tape to seal the bags but I still have that problem. Ants are also another problem I have to deal with. I also don’t like wasting tape. Then I found these:

These bag clips are a great help! I don’t know why my snacks still remain fresh, crunchy and crispy by just using them. I’ve had my M&S crackers for weeks now and I only use a bag clip to seal them but they’re still crunchy. I tried the clips with other snacks and got the same results.

These are a bit pricey but I think they’re worth it. I got these from Howard’s. I use these for my son’s snacks too.

Asian Secrets Lulur Facial Scrub

You gals know that I’m a huge fan of Asian Secrets Lulur body scrubs One day,  while browsing the aisles of Watsons in Century City, I chanced upon this facial scrub. I immediately bought it.

I was really disappointed with this scrub as the beads are too big and they hurt my sensitive skin. It smells like the body scrub but I think that’s all I like about this product. I finished the tube nonetheless even when I wasn’t very happy about it. It’s still Clinique for me when it comes to facial scrubs.

Gentle Yet Effective

I am a huge fan of Dove products. I use their body washes, shampoos and conditioners in rotation with other products but no matter how many products I try, I keep coming back to Dove.

I tried the original Dove facial wash but didn’t like the scent very much. It smelled like the original soap which I am not a fan of. So, when I finished that tube, I tried this one.

This is the cucumber variant for normal to dry skin. It smells really nice, very fresh. I look forward to using it every single time. It’s gentle enough for my super sensitive skin but it controls my breakouts. I really love this product and I will be buying another tube again to bring with me in my travels. At home, we still use the TFS facial wash. My husband does not like this because it doesn’t give a good lather. I don’t mind. I still like it.

Sunday, July 13, 2014

My mom, son and I tried the food at CafĂ© Isla in Century City back when the mall first opened. We didn’t like it very much. We tried the food at XO Restaurant  (the mother resto) because I saw that it was packed one Sunday when my family went there. I thought that it would be better. I was wrong.

We were given complimentary chichacorn for appetizers. They also gave us complimentary puto.

I loved the chicacorn but didn’t like the puto. They were too sweet. Mom found them too sweet as well. We were given plain butter and tinapa butter, I think. It was okay.

We were also given this riddle which already had the answer printed on the bottom.

I ordered a calamansi soda but it was terribly sweet too.

I ordered this sotanghon dish which I shared with my son. It was okay but like the arroz caldo, this was too garlicky. It was satisfactory, I guess.

Mom got her favorite ginataang halo halo but got disappointed. It was very, very sweet. She wasn’t able to finish this small bowl.

While there, we saw our pediatrician outside looking at the menu. My son and I went out to greet him. When we went to see him in the clinic, I told him that it was good that he didn’t eat there as the food was very sweet. He said that it was good I warned him. Both him and I were wondering why the restaurant had many recommendations displayed on their window. Maybe we just don’t have sweet teeth?

Quenching My Thirsty skin

Most readers of my old blog know that I have super dry skin so it’s only normal for me to switch lotions from time to time.

I bought a set of Honeymania body products from The Body Shop a while back and one of the items was this body butter. I really enjoyed this product. It smells really nice. I love the smell of honey so I did not hesitate in buying this even when there were no testers available.

The quality is like the other TBS body butters. It was very good in keeping my skin hydrated. It melts like butter and easily gets absorbed by my skin. I packed this in my suitcase every time we traveled. I never used this at home.

I’m really happy with this product but TBS has some new offerings so I guess I’ll be skipping buying this for a while.
